What to do if you lose something…

First: take preventative action:

A safety bag (such as a money belt or a pouch on a cord around the neck), just the right size to contain your ID., credit card(s), passport, and airline tickets, is highly advised; it must be concealed. You should not store important documents in a bum bag / fanny pack.

Leave a photocopy of all important documents, including passport, travel insurance and airline tickets, at home. Also exchange a copy of these documents with a traveling partner, and retain a copy yourself. If you lose (an) important document(s), and have to re-apply (e.g., passport, or an emergency travel document), it really speeds things up if all the details of your missing documents are known.

LOST AIRLINE TICKETS
Electronic tickets should not have this problem. Keep a digital copy in your web-accessible email folder. If even digital copies are lost, contact the airline and report the loss. You will be asked to quote your ticket numbers, so have the photocopy handy; there may be a service charge for reissuing the ticket. You should arrive at the airport 4-5 hours early to obtain your new ticket. If you only have a printout, and the ticket is damaged, (i.e. accidentally washed) take the remains of the ticket to the airline service when you pick up the new voucher.

LOST POSSESSIONS
Any loss or theft of important documents or possessions should also be filed with the local authorities. Make sure you receive a copy of the police report. Remember to always obtain paper verification of all thefts for insurance purposes.

LOST LUGGAGE
Go to the airline Lost Luggage Counter and report your missing luggage. You will need your copy of the luggage tag (usually a bar code sticker applied to the back of your boarding pass). They will locate the baggage and have it properly routed. If your baggage is missing for more than 24 hours and you have baggage insurance, (e.g. Plan C from Bon Voyage), you may be eligible for a designated mount of compensation for essential items (see specific details of current plan).

LOST PASSPORT
Visit the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consular Mission immediately. Remember to take the copy of your passport you brought with you from Canada. The addresses and phone numbers for the Canadian embassies in the countries you are visiting are listed above.

WHAT IF YOU GET LOST?
Because this is a very large and mobile Field School, it is important that you pay close attention to and record all announcements concerning academic meeting times, day-trips, transfers, departure times and locations. Information concerning changes will be given out at "re-assembly" immediately following check-ins, and at the beginning of each day.  We will use a group counting system to keep track of everyone. In case you do become lost, contact a friend or the instructor (cell # is on the first page).
